Brightness and Contrast in Photoshop CS5

Brightness and contrast settings allow you to make changes to the tonal range of an image. These settings apply to every pixel in an image. If an image is too dark it can be lightened. If it looks too light, or washed out, you can make changes to the brightness and contrast.

To make changes to one area within an image use the marquee tool. Alternatively you can apply changes to the original image or by creating an adjustment layer.

To make changes to the orginial image you need to go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness and Contrast.

To make changes to an image using an adjustment layer go to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Brightness/Contrast.

The best way to investigate these settings is by experimenting with some images.
